Renovations are finally moving forward! We now have a cooler up and almost functioning. Soon the counters for the design area will be up.

We are still getting fresh product in 3 or 4 times a week. We are excited about getting new products for the upcoming fall and winter months.

Todd and Sarah Bachman

We have recently been informed of the tragic passing of Todd Bachman in china, and his wife Sarah's injuries. ( Of Bachman Floral) Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time, We all hope for the best outcome in the future from this horrible incident. An 18" taper candle is your light saber
you think everyone builds things out of hyacinth stakes
you think the box full are "oases" therefore, one of them is an "oase"

Flowers For Kids

Flowers For Kids is a project designed to teach elementary school students and kids of all ages about flowers; where they come from, how to care for them and how to make a bouquet. Each child gets to bring whatever they make home to give to family or friends.

We're very pleased to announce that Erlene LeBorgne, proprietor of Rosemont Floral, will travel to Quito, Ecuador in September to become certified to teach the program to students. Additionally, Erlene will be certified as a Flowers For Kids trainer and will teach the FFK program to other retail florists in the United States.

While in Ecuador Erlene will also tour flower farms and attend two days of FlorEcuador-AgriFlor, an international trade show of Ecuadorian flower producers.

Even on vacation!

Our family has been blessed to spend part of our summers on an idyllic island in Downeast Maine. Most people don't get it, but going to the same place every year gives you a sense of belonging, stability, a constant in an ever-changing world. You count life a little more long term when every summer for the past thirty-some you arrive to a place that little has changed...it actually is a bit too much like "Brigadoon" sometimes. But the beauty of God's creation totally envelopes you constantly

So usually during the few weeks the family is living on Swan's Island, I return to York, PA to work sometime...a busy wedding weekend or the like ( like this past weekend where we produced five gorgeous wedding events...see our next blog!)

The fun thing for me is to return to the island with a few boxes of fresh flowers. Some to make simple bouquets to give as gifts to friends, others to grace our home, and still more to "get creative" in an outdoor studio with the coastal breeze blowing...no phones, no interruptions, no $30 orders to be finished in 10 minutes while the driver waits...just flowers, time, and nature as inspiration.

This time I returned to Swan's Island in time for the annual Sweet Chariot Music Festival...a coraborative effort of some very fine folk musicians from around the country. The first night is a dress rehearsal performance of sorts for the island people done in a more informal manner. The show producer wanted a "campfire" to sing around...but this venue is a huge wooden structure, so no fire! I looked down and saw in my buckets a campfire with sunflowers, red safari sunset, orange mokara orchids, red hypericum, and more. So, what floral designer could resist?!

I took an antique brass pot and surrounded it with birch logs and charred logs to create the base, then had an explosion of the fresh flowers to create the flames.

Extending out of the main design was long birch branches that we pierced sunflower petals to imitate sparks.

With some nice lighting, the musicians looked like they had a warm glow shining on them.

Even on vacation, a floral designer can work with flowers, and still be on vacation!

Earthquakes and Flowers

By now, most folks know that So Cal was hit with a 5.4 earthquake yesterday. The shaking started at about a quarter 'til noon, just as I happened to be standing in our walk-in flower cooler - surrounded by three walls of glass windows and a wall of mirrors. Not exactly the best spot in a flower shop, but I got off much more lightly than some of the people featured in this Orange County Register article, including a surgeon in the middle of a procedure and a guy standing atop a 10-foot ladder!

We had a few vases tumble off shelves, but like most everyone else, the quake's affect was minor (except on our nerves.) I told our team to expect a quiet afternoon, figuring most people would be busy dealing with the after effects.

About an hour later, we had an "Only in Southern California" moment. Arriving via our website was a flower order for delivery today with the message "Congratulations on surviving your first earthquake." Love it!

Surprisingly, a number of customers dropped in to pick up flowers on their way home. Some were for special occasions, but others were 'just because.' It seems that an earthquake (even a relatively minor one like yesterday's) can remind us to cherish the people most important in our lives.

Central Square Theater

It’s exciting to welcome Central Square’s newest business the Central Square Theater.
After 12 years a permanent home has been found in Central Square. The Theater will combine The Underground Railway Theater and The Nora Theatre Company. Central Square Florist was pleased to provide two flower arrangements for their soft grand opening July 24th. A selection of Purple and Blue flowers with some bright yellow was chosen to accent the colors in the theater’s lobby.

Out Door Chuppah

Sunday July 13, 2008 Central Square Florist provided a beautiful Chuppah for an out door ceremony that took place in the courtyard at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge. The courtyard has many planters that include blooming and green plants that add to the atmosphere. While the space is open to the public viewing of the ceremony the hotel tells us that during the ceremony a hush comes over the area.

Central Square Florist decorated the 4 poles and the top of the Chuppah with fresh greenery. Two sprays of red roses with white orchids , snap dragons and queen anne lace added some color .

A chuppah (also spelled huppa, chupah, or chuppa - plural chuppot) is a canopy traditionally used in Jewish weddings. It consists of a cloth or sheet — sometimes a tallit ("prayer shawl") — stretched or supported over four poles, and is sometimes held or carried by attendants to the ceremony location. It is meant to symbolize the home which the couple will build together.

Perennial Flowers from the NorthEast

We here at Crighton's Florist & Greenhouses, western Pennsylvania, were asked to create a casket spray and matching foot spray in early July. The requirements were that they be of summer flowers. We had learned the deceased was from a farm and loved her rural life. Besides going to our refrigerated floral coolers, we also went with knife in hand to the perennial beds. Her family was presented with phlox, several types of hosta leaves and flowers, Queen Anne's lace, sweet peas, purple coneflower, and privet, along with the carnations, lilies, gladioli and delphinium we had purchased. The REALLY fresh flowers had been carefully hydrated and cooled prior to their use. It was just a treat to be able to satisfy the family when they were so vulnerable by being the florist with greenhouses and perennial beds.

Heather and Shane

Married on May 10th, Heather chose to use beautiful Talea+ roses and Viviane! spray roses from Eufloria Flowers for her bouquet accented with lily grass and ivy in a contemporary cascade bouquet. Her bridesmaids carried handtied bouquets of matching flowers.

York PA Weddings 2008

The wedding season has been bustling here at Butera The Florist. We have been occupied so much with them every week that this is in fact the first time I have had a chance to post photos and commentary. Here are some of the highlights from the past two weeks...

It seems that daisies are the hot flower during June here in York. Michelle and Mike chose the pure white garden daisy as their signature flower for their June 14th wedding.

The bridal bouquet was a handtied design of solely daisies with just a hint of buplerum, while the attendants bouquets also featured a mix of white daisies with bright yellow Gerbera.

Daisies were added to the church pew bows of tulle and filled the altar table area

The quests were greeted at their reception tables with glass orb bowls filled the brides favorite flower! It was a perfect accent to the reception held in a tent on a summer afternoon at the Bride's family home.

Later that same day we were showing Holly her bridal bouquet of daisies...this time it was deep burgundy Gerbera with beautiful Chablis roses, deep red alsortemeria and jade hypericum.

Holly's attendants carried coordinated bouquets of light peach Gerbera, dark red alstroemeria and jade hypericum.

Allison's June 14 wedding featured the hot vibrant colors. We paired Starfighter lilies, purple lisianthus, Hot Princess roses and of course hot pink Gerbera with the hit of bright jade button mums! It was a vivid punch of color against the attendants black a-line gowns.

Her reception at the Stone Mill Inn featured a beautiful cake adorned by petals of Hot Princess roses.

Of the four wedding events on June 21, one bride chose an abundance of the popular daisies!

Jennifer chose a combination of crisp white daisies and pink Sorbonne lilies with solidago and waxflower as her first day of summer bridal bouquet, whlie her attendants carried complimentary bouquets of white daisies with pink alstroemeria, solidago and waxflower...a happy summery look against the aqua blue gowns.

Cinda chose the soft romantic look with creamy Vandella roses paired with lavander blooms of Phlox, Freesia and Campanula in a handtied design.

Cinda's attendants carried the lavander colors of freesia, campanula and Cool Water roses along with lanander Daisies.

Ashlin wanted her first day of Summer wedding to be bright and happy...the weather cooperated and so did her flowers!

Her bridal bouquet was a tight mound of cornflower blue hydrangea with pale yellow roses and yellow freesia.

As always, every bride has a dream for the look and feel of her wedding... our priority is to translate that into flowers and help to make her dream come true! It is always a privledge to be a part of so many weddings in York.

Pave' Arrangements at The Bloomery

Pave' (pah-vay) arrangements are characterized by lush, compact designs of colorful flowers. Often, pave arrangements are made in low glass bowls, but you'll see small boxes and other unique containers used as well. At The Bloomery, we've sort of taken to using different styles of containers. Some of the container we've used are wooden boxes, wire treasure chests and jewelry boxes. A jewelry box is slightly ironic, since pave arrangements are named for pave jewelry which is emulated by the flower designs.

Below are a few examples of pave arrangements we've made (one is a Mother's Day special from2007, the others were recently delivered to offices). Click on the photo for a larger image.

Mother's Day Flowers: Comparison Shopping

Readers of our blog know I've long urged shoppers to go local and buy direct when ordering flowers. You'll get the absolutely best gift delivery value dollar-for-dollar.

In case you still don't believe me, watch this consumer report from Washington DC's NBC4: Mother's Day Flowers. The reporter compared $50 in flowers from ProFlowers.com, 1-800-Flowers.com, FTD.com, OrganicBouquet.com and a local Washington DC Florist, Greenworks.

The bouquets were judged by shoppers at a local mall and by overwhelming majority, the Greenworks arrangement was chosen best. (As a quick aside, the company coming in dead last doesn't like it when people report about the shortfalls of their products. They recently sent a couple local florists a cease and desist for writing about their dealings with the company. The story of ProFlowers' reputation management can be found on FloristDetective.com.)

Similar comparison results were seen in a recent test made by NBC's Weekend Today: Tricks of the Trade - What Your Florist Won't Tell You. Two bouquets costing $50.00 - the one from the local florist on the left and the one through a 'national' online-only company on the right - say it all.

And the title of the piece is ironic since this is exactly the kind of information we local florists really want consumers to know.

It's not too late to send Mother's Day flowers and still get a great value. If your Mom lives in our Anaheim or Orange County delivery area, we hope you'll give us a call or order online.

If she lives out of our delivery area, I recommend using Google Maps. Type in your mom's address and click 'Search Nearby' on the pop-up balloon. Type 'florist' in the box and you'll get a list of local stores - many with user reviews, links to online ordering and business hours details. Then you can know what'll be delivered and save up to $20 in unneeded service charges from a national company.

But no matter how you order, don't forget Mom.

Consumer Alert: ProFlowers

In the past I have written about the dangers and the deception involved in sending boxed flowers through services such as FedEx. The dangers include extreme temperatures and not getting what was pictured. My blog post had shown an actual delivery and the condition of the flowers received. The individual who posted the video was sued by proflowers.com and forced to remove the video. I have also removed my link in the past blog to the video.

Don't just give mom flowers...GIVE HER DISTINCTIVE FLORAL DESIGN!

Just in time for Mother's day, Butera The Florist is scheduling " Evening with the Florist" open registration evenings. Evening with the Florist is our own in-store floral design event... It's fun, it's educational, it's entertaining...it's "Edutainment"!

In the design studio section of our store, Vince Butera AIFD, PFCI will take the audience on a floral design journey. He will demonstrate a variety of styles, discuss various products, show professional techniques...all while creating a number of fresh floral designs in front of you.

"Evening with the Florist" has previously only been scheduled for closed groups, The open registration evenings are scheduled for individuals or small groups. Current available dates are Thursday May 15 and Tuesday June 3. The show begins at 6:30pm.

Reservations are now being accepted with advance registrations... the fee is $55.00 per person. Light refreshments will be available, and you are welcome to also bring your own if you wish. Our cafe tables seat 4 each, and we have a maximum attendance of 16.

Featured Flowers: Tulips

Although usually associated with Holland, tulips originated in Persia, and are indigenous to Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey. Tulips are believed to have come to Europe in the 16th century. In almost no time at all, tulips became a very popular flower, especially in Holland and France. Even today, we refer to varieties of tulips as being "Dutch Tulips" or "French Tulips", despite their origins.

Unlike most flowers, tulips cannot be grown in a warm tropical climate, since they require a cold period to induce plant growth. Tulips are one of the few flowers whose stems continue to grow after they bloom. It is thought that in nature, the pointed blossom helps the flower push through any remaining snow, and the stem's elongation lifts the blossom above the snow and away from the parent bulb. Warmth and light seem to trigger this behavior. In modern arrangements of cut tulips, the stem's elongation gives rise to the charachteristc graceful gooseneck bends in vased arrangements.

Dutch tulips usually have a smaller bloom and a shorter stem, while French tulips have a considerably larger blossom and longer stem. Both varieties are available in an amazing assortment of colors. Another type of tulip popular in floral shops is the parrot tulip, whose petals have feathered or fringed edges.

Tulips are available pretty much throught the year, thanks to modern coldhouses and cultivation in the southern hemisphere. For field grown tulips in the northern hemisphere, the peak season is December through April. Thanks to their colors and availability, tulips are gaining more and more popularity at Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter. During "field season" in the US, most tulips are grown domestically or are imported from Holland. Tulips in the summer are usually imported from South Africa, Australia or New Zealand.

In nature, tulips prefer cool. To help your tulip arrangement last longer, keep it in a cool location, away from direct heat. Since tulips bend toward light, it's a good idea to rotate a tulip arrangement every day, or place them in a spot with even light. If you did not receive a packet of flower food with your arrangement, the water should be changed and the stems should be recut daily. Tulips are also sensitive to ethylene gas, which is given off by ripening fruit, so keep flowers and fruit away from one another.

Brand Flowers and the Sun Valley Group are two leading growers of tulips. If you're planning an event which will include tulips, their websites are a good resource. Their flowers are available through your local florist (they do not sell direct to consumers), so when you find something you like, talk to your local florist to arrange the details.

Mother's Day 2008 Preview

This year, we're preparing something unique for Mother's Day. We've planted a series of premium hanging baskets and porch planters in our family's greenhouses. Every basket will feature a lush selection of white, pink and purple flowers. Plants include petunias, sweet potato vine, bacopa (bridal veil), Swedish Ivy and calibrachoa. These special planters and baskets will receive tender loving care over the next few weeks, and will be unlike any other in the Butler area.
